Study design
The Melbourne Atherosclerosis Vitamin E Trial (MAVET ) is a two-arm clinical trial based in Melbourne, Australia. The principal aim of the trial was to investigate the effect of Vitamin E (500IU/day) versus placebo on progression of carotid intima-media thickness. Individuals were eligible for inclusion if they were aged 55 years or older and regularly smoked over five cigarettes per day. The protocol was approved by the Standing Committee on Ethics in Research Involving Humans at Monash University. All patients gave their written consent to participate in the study.
