The Epidemiología Cardiovascular en los Ancianos en Espa?ña (EPICARDIAN) Study is a general population study based in Lista district (Madrid city), Arévalo county (Avila), and Begonte county (Lugo) in Spain. Individuals of the Lista district were obtained via age- and sex- stratified random sampling. In contrast, all registered elders of the other two centres were contacted. The principal aim of the study was to estimate the incidence of cardiovascular disease in the elderly Spanish population and estimate the consequences of being exposed to cardiovascular risk factors. All participants signed an informed consent at the beginning of the study. The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee of the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa, Madrid.
