Study design

The Atherosclerosis and Insulin Resistance Study (AIR) is a general population study based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Male individuals at the age of 58 listed in the county council register of Gothenburg were contacted and recruited between 1995 and 1997. Inclusion criteria were 58 years of age, Swedish ancestry, and living in Gothenburg, Sweden. Individuals were excluded if they had cardiovascular or other clinically overt diseases (e.g., malignancy or psychiatric disease) and were on continuous medication with cardiovascular drugs (i.e., antidiabetic, lipid-lowering, antihypertensive, and heart failure drugs or drugs for angina pectoris). The principal aim of the study was to investigate the development of atherosclerosis in men with different degrees of insulin resistance. All men received both written and oral information before consenting to participate in the study. The study was approved by the ethics committee at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
