Study design

The Study Papagianni et al. is focusing on individuals on haemodialysis and is based in Thessaloniki, Greece. Individuals attending the dialysis unit of the University Department of Nephrology at Hippokration General Hospital and one affiliated outpatient dialysis centre due to chronic maintenance haemodialysis between January and April 2001 were enrolled in this study. Exclusion criteria were diabetes mellitus, liver disease, autoimmune diseases, and malignancies. The principal aim of the study was to investigate the association of circulating endothelial cell adhesion molecules with atherosclerotic disease in non-diabetic individuals on haemodialysis. The protocol conformed to the institution’s ethical guidelines of was approved by its ethical committee. Furthermore, informed consent was obtained from each patient.
