Study design

The Study Masiá et al. is a two-arm clinical trial based in Spain. The principal aim of the trial was to investigate the effect of standard intervention on cardiovascular risk factors versus intensive intervention on cardiovascular risk factors on progression of atherosclerosis in stable HIV-infected patients with moderate–high cardiovascular risk. Individuals were identified when attending the HIV outpatient clinic of a University General Hospital during a six month period and were eligible for inclusion if they were consecutive HIV-infected, received a successful antiretroviral therapy, and had at least two cardiovascular risk factors or a Framingham risk score greater or equal to 10%. The study was approved by the local Ethics Committee, and all the patients gave their informed consent.
