Study design

The Study Honda et al. is focusing on individuals on haemodialysis and is based in Tokyo, Japan. Exclusion criteria were clinical signs of overt infection, acute vasculitis, or liver disease at the time of recruitment. The principal aim of the study was to investigate the effects of myeloperoxidase and oxidative α–antitrypsin on carotid intima-media thickness and protein-energy wasting in patients on haemodialysis. The Ethics Committee of Showa University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan, approved the study protocol and written informed consent was obtained from all participating patients.
